Strongest force between the molecules
Use this for “What is the strongest force between molecules of methanol, CH₃OH?”
Sort
What is the strongest force between the particles?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
Ask in turn: is there an ion in a polar solvent, an H on N, O or F, a net dipole? If none, only London forces.
Assumptions
•
Every molecule feels London dispersion forces; a card goes in the group of the strongest force it adds on top of them.
•
A hydrogen bond needs H bonded straight to N, O or F; in CH₃OCH₃ and CH₂O every H is on carbon.
•
A molecule whose bond dipoles cancel by symmetry, like CO₂, is nonpolar even though its bonds are polar.
