How many d–d bands?
Use this for “How many spin-allowed d–d bands does [V(H₂O)₆]³⁺ show? And [Fe(H₂O)₆]²⁺?”
Sort
How many spin-allowed d–d bands does the ion show?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
Count the d electrons, then find the free ion’s ground term: D, F or S.
Assumptions
•
Each ion is high spin and octahedral, and only spin-allowed d–d bands count: those that keep the number of unpaired electrons.
•
The free ion’s ground term sets the count: a D term gives one band, an F term three, and the ⁶S of d⁵ none.
•
A Jahn–Teller distortion can give one band a shoulder (Ti³⁺, Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺); it still counts as one.
•
The third band of d² is weak and often hidden under charge transfer, but it is spin-allowed.
