The name’s ending from the functional group
Use this for “Name HOCH₂CH₂COOH. Which group gives the ending, and which becomes a prefix?”
Sort
Which ending does each compound’s name take?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
With two groups, the one higher in priority gives the ending; the other becomes a prefix (hydroxy-).
Assumptions
•
The lit atoms on each structure are its functional groups; most cards have one, the last two have two.
•
Priority for the ending, highest first: acid, ester, amide, nitrile, aldehyde, ketone, alcohol, amine.
•
With two groups, the one higher in priority gives the ending; the other becomes a prefix (hydroxy-, oxo-, amino-).
