Alkenes and alkynes

Use this for “Propene reacts with HBr. Is the product 1-bromopropane or 2-bromopropane?”

Sort

Where does the new group (not the H) go?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
Where a cation forms, it forms on the more substituted carbon, and the new group bonds there.

Assumptions

•
Each reagent adds to an unsymmetrical alkene such as propene or 2-methylpropene, or to an alkyne where the card says so.
•
The more substituted carbon of the C=C is the one with more carbons bonded to it.
•
A cation is more stable on a carbon with more carbons around it: tertiary over secondary over primary.
•
An alkyne follows the same rule as an alkene, one equivalent of the reagent at a time.
