Organic Chemistry II · Problem type

Primary, secondary or tertiary amine?

Use this for “Is (CH₃)₃CNH₂ a primary or a tertiary amine?”

Sort

How many carbons are bonded to each nitrogen?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
Count the carbons on the nitrogen, not on the carbon next to it.

Assumptions

•
The lit atom on each structure is the nitrogen; every corner or line end in the drawing is a carbon.
•
An amine is classed by how many carbons are bonded to its nitrogen: one is primary, two secondary, three tertiary.
•
A nitrogen with four carbons on it carries a + charge and has no H left: a quaternary ammonium ion.
•
A ring through the nitrogen puts two carbons on it; a benzene ring joins it by one carbon.
