Assumptions

•
Each stage’s gain is measured with the next stage connected, so loading is already in it.
•
Gains are sizes (an inverting stage’s minus sign is left out); in decibels a voltage gain is G = 20 log₁₀ A.

Step-by-step

WE KNOW
A₁ = 20, A₂ = 50
FIND
stage 1 in dB (G₁), stage 2 in dB (G₂), overall gain (A), overall in dB (G)
Step 1 · Find stage 1 in dB (G₁)
Use G₁ = 20 × log₁₀(A₁)
A voltage ratio in decibels is 20 times its common log (stage 1).

Step 2 · Find stage 2 in dB (G₂)
Use G₂ = 20 × log₁₀(A₂)
A voltage ratio in decibels is 20 times its common log (stage 2).

Step 3 · Find overall gain (A)
Use A = A₁ × A₂
Stage 2 multiplies what stage 1 hands it, so gains in a chain multiply.

Step 4 · Find overall in dB (G)
Use G = G₁ + G₂
The log of a product is the sum of the logs, so decibels add.
