Binomial bars: n = 40 trials, each a success with chance p = 0.25.
μ = n × p = 40 × 0.25 = 10
σ = √(n × p × (1 − p)) = 2.7386

Assumptions

•
n independent trials, each a success with the same chance p; X counts the successes.
•
X has mean np and standard deviation √(np(1 − p)).
•
X is close to normal when np ≥ 10 and n(1 − p) ≥ 10.

Step-by-step

WE KNOW
n = 40, p = 0.25
FIND
mean count (μ), standard deviation of the count (σ)
Step 1 · Find mean count (μ)
Use μ = n × p
On
average,
the
share
p
of
the
n
trials
succeed.

Step 2 · Find standard deviation of the count (σ)
Use σ = √(n × p × (1 − p))

Check
Put the numbers back in. Both sides should match.
10 = 40 × 0.25 ✓
2.7386 ≈ √(40 × 0.25 × (1 − 0.25)) ✓
