Unknown angles with an equation

Use this for “Two supplementary angles: one is twice the other. Find both.”

a + b = 180°
60° + 120° = 180°
Supplementary angles: together they make a straight line.

Assumptions

•
Call the smaller angle a. The bigger one is k times as big: k × a.
•
Together they make a straight line: a + k × a = 180, so (1 + k) × a = 180.
•
Divide 180 by 1 + k for the smaller angle.
•
With k = 1 the two angles are equal.

Step-by-step

WE KNOW
k = 2 (times as big)
FIND
smaller angle (a), bigger angle (b)
Step 1 · Find smaller angle (a)
Use a = 180 ÷ (1 + k) (smaller angle = 180 ÷ (1 + times as big))
a
and
k
×
a
make
180,
so

Step 2 · Find bigger angle (b)
Use b = k × a (bigger angle = times as big × smaller angle)
The
bigger
angle
is
k
