Grade 11 Science · Problem type
Reading a motion diagram
Use this for “A strobe photo shows a runner every second. Is the runner speeding up, slowing down or steady?”
Sort
How is it moving?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
Assumptions
•
Each dot is where the object is, one second apart; the open dot is the first.
•
Equal gaps in equal times mean constant velocity; growing gaps, speeding up; shrinking gaps, slowing down.
•
The arrow is the way it moves: the gaps tell the speed whichever way that is.

Free fall from rest
Use this for “A stone falls from rest for 3 s. How far does it fall, and how fast is it going?”
Braking distance
Use this for “A car at 25 m/s brakes at 5 m/s² to a stop. How far does it go, and how long does it take?”
Position–time graph: velocity is the slope
Use this for “x = 10 − 6t + t². How fast is it moving at t = 5 s, where is it, and when does it turn round?”
Turning round: displacement and distance
Use this for “A ball rolls up a ramp at 12 m/s and slows at 4 m/s². Where is it after 5 s, and how far has it rolled?”
