Body systems, homeostasis and feedback loops

See how feedback loops keep body temperature, blood sugar and water balance steady, and where positive feedback differs.

STIMULUSBody temperature rises above its setpoint during exercise.SENSORNerve endings in the skin and braindetect the rise.CONTROL CENTERThe hypothalamus compares it with theset point.EFFECTORSweat glands release sweat; skin bloodvessels widen.RESPONSESweat evaporates and blood sheds heat,so temperature falls.−negativefeedback
During exercise the rise in temperature is the stimulus, and sweating is the response.
The response undoes the stimulus, so this is negative feedback.

Assumptions

•
Homeostasis keeps conditions inside the body near a set point, such as about 37 °C.
•
Negative feedback undoes the change and switches off once the set point returns.
•
Positive feedback makes the change grow until an event ends it.
