Glycogen: made or broken down?
Use this for “Does glycogen phosphorylase act when glycogen is made or when it is broken down? And phosphoglucomutase?”
Sort
Does this enzyme work in glycogen synthesis, breakdown or both?

Follow glucose 1-phosphate: is it made into UDP-glucose for the chain, or split off the chain?
Assumptions
•
Synthesis: glucose 6-phosphate → glucose 1-phosphate → UDP-glucose, added to chain ends by α(1→4) links, with α(1→6) branches.
•
Breakdown: phosphate splits glucose 1-phosphate off the chain ends, then the branches are removed; the liver frees glucose for the blood.
•
The two paths use different enzymes, so each can be switched on or off by itself (insulin, glucagon, adrenaline).
